Q: Who won the quiz night?

Families were quite surprised to find our family quiz night at Penyffordd and Penymynydd British Legion was a University Challenge-style contest instead of your average pub quiz.

Becca organised us into teams; under 8s, 8-16, parents and grandparents.

We all gave ourselves team names. Quiz host for the night was Steve, with a mix of age appropriate questions.

Well done to our winners, The Happy Donuts, in the eight-16 category. Our runners-up were an under 8 team, Gym Friends.

Following the quiz, the girls finished the night with a dance off, of course.

Thank you to Becca and Steve for organising a brilliant night and to everyone for coming.

Welcome Kristy

Gym club parent Kristy Messham has volunteered as a new welfare officer. Her daughter, Erin, is in the development class. Here, she explains a little more about herself.

kristy-messhamI have always loved gymnastics as a sport and found myself wanting to become more involved when Erin started gym.

I work for the NSPCC in the Schools Service; working with children in primary schools to educate them about keeping themselves safe.

Safeguarding is something I am passionate about and I believe that it is really important that children know that they have somewhere to turn if they have problems or worries.

The role of welfare officer seemed like a great way to put this into practice and to also be involved in a sport that I really enjoy.

Didn’t they do well?

Derry
On 26 June four advanced class gymnasts travelled to Derry, Northern Ireland, accompanied by coaches Stan Buckley and Ceri Sass to take part in a week’s training camp with international performance coach Prof Walter Consonni and gymnasts at Twisters Gymnastic Club.

Gymnasts Bella Bailey (club captain), Abigail Hogg, Isabella Roberts and Elise Laflamme were welcomed by our club’s long-time friend and Twisters’ chief coach Terri Fisher and they were hosted by families during the stay.

Following the week’s training, the girls took part in the Maiden Cup, with teams from Southern and Northern Ireland, Wales and England taking part.

The Buckley team took gold, silver and bronze medals on all four pieces of apparatus, finishing the day off as team champions.

Mr Buckley said: “Once again we send our thanks to Terri, gymnasts and families at Twisters for yet another great week, and thank you Team Buckley for your hard work and professionalism whilst representing our club.”
