Medals and memories from Derry trip

Advanced girls in DerryTen of our Advanced girls travelled to Derry, Northern Ireland, to take part in a training camp held at Twisters Gymnastics club, writes coach Tara.

Abi, Bella, Lydia, Megan, Zara, Ellie, Macey, Ava, Olivia and Rosie flew out to Ireland on Thursday 24 May to stay with host families. This was the first gymnastics trip for some of our Advanced gymnasts. They were accompanied by myself and Shelley.

The girls trained in the day with high level coaches such as national coach Walter Consonni.

The girls enjoyed gaining new skills and made full use of Twisters’ bars and tumble pits. Also, during the girls’ stay with host families, they were treated to days out at a park and farm as well as BBQs and bowling.

The maiden City Cup competition was held on Sunday 27 May and the girls performed fantastically, gaining many medals for individual apparatus and overall positions were also achieved.

They flew home on Tuesday excited to show off their medals and share their experiences with club mates. Myself and Shelley were immensely proud of the girls’ team spirit and maturity throughout the whole trip.

A big thank you to Twisters, host families and coaches for giving the girls an experience they will never forget.

We are also very thankful to Mr and Mrs Buckley for arranging this safe, fun and memorable trip every year with our great friends at Twisters.

Updated: Amelia competes at British finals

Amelia with head coach CeriAmelia is the first Buckley gymnast in around 10 years to reach a British finals, writes head coach Ceri.

Her third place finish in the Welsh National Grade 2 Championships in March means that she will be travelling to Stoke-on-Trent to represent Wales on Sunday with three Welsh gymnasts from other clubs.

She will compete in a Welsh team against the other regions across Britain in the event organised by British Gymnastics.

We are immensely proud of her. Her dedication, hard work and attitude has paid off.

Amelia and CeriUPDATED Sunday: Ceri writes: “Super proud of this young lady today! First British finals for both of us and she performed beautifully! Clean routines and outscored her Welsh score by 2 whole marks! 34/56 competitors with the Welsh Team finishing in 8th! Thank you to everyone that has wished us good luck and came to support Amelia on the day! Goal achieved!”

Star shape: Move of the month

Step 1: Ask the gymnast to lie on their back with their arms and legs spread out wide.

The arms should be flat on the mat.

The legs should be straight and their knees should be pushed into the mat and toes pointed. The knees should be facing towards the ceiling.

Step 2: You can make a star shape standing up.  Again arms are straight, legs are straight and knees are pointing forward.

Step 3: Star Jump

Start with legs together and arms crossed in front of the body

Step 4: Arms swing out and back and legs bend to give the power for the jump.  This is actually more difficult to co-ordinate than you might think.  Keep the feet together.

Step 5: Jump up with arms and legs spreading out wide to make the star shape in the air.  Arms and legs should be straight.

Step 6: Land with knees bent and feet together. The arms sweep round to the front into the landing position.

Step 7: The landing position which is the same for any jump.  Count 1,2,3 in this position. This shows the judge they have good control and a secure landing.

Step 8: Finish!

Thank you to Lottie for being so patient trying to get these action shots and Milly for taking them. [Apologies to Erin and Niamh for forgetting we had already done pencil!]
