International Women’s day 2023

Wednesday 8 March is International Women’s Day 2023.

This year to mark the day our club captain Mia has given us her take on what this year’s theme means to her.

Mia writes:

“Today is International Women’s Day where we come together and celebrate women all around the world. This year’s theme is all about Equality vs Equity.

Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities whereas Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

At Buckley Gymnastics Club all gymnasts are at different stages/levels and have different abilities. We are fortunate that the club offers a range of resources and coaching expertise to support and help the gymnasts achieve their goals. For example, when learning a new skill like a forward roll some gymnasts will learn it from just having guidance from a coach, or observing another gymnast, whereas some gymnasts may need extra coaching or use aid such as the wedge for further help to learn and master the skill to the best of their ability.

The coaches work closely with the gymnasts and have excellent knowledge to ensure all abilities are catered for using Equity. Whereas if the coaches just used Equality not all girls would achieve, and progress would not always be seen. Having Equity in our club helps provide opportunities for all gymnasts to achieve success”

Thank you to Mia for her words, we will always aim to embrace equity in the club.

There’s lots of inspiration of women in sport on the International Women’s Day website.
